Frequently Asked Questions

What does neurodiversity affirming assessments look for?

We use a variety of assessments tools to evaluate executive function, sensory profiles, and social and emotional impact. By looking at these areas, we can assess for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism, and various mental and emotional health concerns.

How is a neurodiversity affirming assessment different? Can’t I just go to a psychiatrist for diagnosis?

When we talk about assessments to confirm neurodiversity, in this case ADHD and autism, there are two types of instruments used: broad band and narrow band. Narrow band instruments would be things like the DSM 5, or the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. This Manual is often what is used to diagnose mental health struggles, and someone is considered to meet criteria for one of the disorders if they exhibit a percentage of the total symptoms listed.

However, ADHD and autism are complex, and require more than a list of symptoms. For this reason, we use broad band instruments in our assessments. These tools are not prescriptive, and take a close look at a variety of areas of functioning, instead of just checking off a list of symptoms to come to a conclusion about a diagnosis. We examine executive functioning, sensory profiles, and social and emotional impact.

How long is your wait for an appointment?

We strive to reduce the obstacle of long wait times and wait lists from getting assessed for ADHD and autism. We typically are able to schedule the initial consultation within a week of inquiry, and the assessment appointment within 2 weeks after the consultation.

What assessments do you use?

Neurodiversity affirming assessment is not prescriptive, and the assessment instruments we use differ for each person we evaluate.

How long does assessment take?

The initial intake appointment is roughly 60 minutes. After that, on the actual assessment day, we generally tell clients to allot for a 3-4 hour appointment. This depends on the type of assessments used, and how many we use in total.
